In Memoriam

John Dobson

John started bowling in 1962, joining the Sponsors League at Moonah Bowl, and continued bowling this league until he became ill in 2006 - 44 years continuous participation.
John was the league delegate for 10 years, Vice President of the Southern Tasmanian Tenpin Bowling Association (now known as the Hobart Tenpin Bowling Association) for 2 years and then President of the STTBA for over 20 years. He has also held the position of Manager for Tasmanian Rachuig sides between 1976 and 1983 (8 years) and has been the TBA Tasmanian State Manager since the position was created.

John Dobson was ATBC delegate for 2 years and then ATBC Director for over 20 years. John was the backbone of the Nationals tournament team for both Adults & Juniors for near 30 years and a tireless volunteer worker at both national and state level.

A TBA Lifetime Achievement Awards was bestowed upon John Dobson in October 2006 at the Walter Rachuig Trophy dinner dance. John was inducted into the Tasmanian Tenpin Bowling Hall of Fame in 2007.

Sadly, on Wednesday 13th June 2007 John passed away after a prolonged illness. John's proud nature masked his illness and only those that were close knew that he suffered physically to even be part of everyday life over the last 12 months.

John was part of TBA National Tournaments for many years, he was a true gentleman who directed the nationals with a firm but fair hand for many decades. Holt Challenge Inc pass on our deepest sympathies to John's families and to all his close and many friends.

In memory of John Dobson the Holt Challenge Inc Committee have renamed the traditional Welcome Tournament of the Darrell Holt Tenpin Bowling Carnival as the John Dobson Memorial Touranment.

John Laver

John has been part of every "Restricted Challenge" since this event's inception as the Walter De Veer Trophy and later the Darrell Holt Restricted Challenge. Even under obvious ill-health John travelled to the inaugural Darrell Holt Tenpin Bowling Carnival in Perth to follow his passion for this event and the sport of tenpin bowling. In Perth, John did not hesitate to jump in and help the tournament team collate scores, check-in squads and the like when a shortages of volunteers was obvious. Sadly, John lost his battle with a prolonged illness in January 2008.

Holt Challenge Inc would like to recognise the services and dedication to this event by Mr John Laver.

John will be sadly missed by all but not forgotten as a new Restricted Masters Trophy Perpetual trophy now bears his name.

David Gepp

David Gepp was a League President and also represented Northern Territory in Walter De Veer, Walter Rachuig, Seniors Team Challenge and Arafura Games. Tenpin bowling was a passion and not just a sport to "Geppy", he was a fierce but fair competitor on the lanes and a fiercely loyal friend off them to those who knew him.

He loved a beer, a bbq, a joke, his friends and life. Nothing was ever too hard. Very sadly, Geppy suffered a heart attack and passed away in January 2010.

The interstate trophy competed between Northern Territory versus Victoria during the Holt Challenge has been named in memory of David Gepp.
